Why do I need training if I already have a good voice?
It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. The expression and tone of your voice make a big difference.  Much like a singer, your voice is an instrument and voiceover instruction can teach you how to play your instrument to the best of your ability.

Why do I need to pay for formal instruction when others comment that I would be a natural?

Like any profession, you need training and you need to know exactly what you are doing.  Voiceover acting is a professional career that requires the ability to work alongside others in the industry.  Producers and Directors expect nothing less than a professional voice actor who knows how to take direction and criticism in a studio environment.

Can I make money doing voiceover work?

If you have a voiceover demo and you were trained as a professional, then yes you can make a nice income.  Whether you choose to supplement your income with part time gigs or you do really well and have the option to make it a full time career.

Do I need an agent?

Not necessarily, but it is not a bad idea to have representation because your Agent’s job is to find work for you.  However, most agencies in the U.S. will keep 10-15% of your earnings.

Once I complete training, can I start promoting myself for work?

Absolutely.  Marketing yourself as a professional voice talent enables you to communicate with so many in the industry that are interested in hearing from you …and what you can offer them.

Do I need my own  studio?

If you are planning to do voiceover work full time, then yes.  You don’t have to spend as much as you think on equipment – all you really need is a decent microphone and a  computer and
the right software and you could get started today.

Do I need to join a union?

This depends on where you live.  If you live in Los Angeles or New York, then it is a good idea to join a union.  If you live in Florida, then no – Florida is a non-union state.

How do I know if I am well suited and a potential talent for voiceover work?

Speaking to a voice coach and asking he/she to listen to you read copy will be a good barometer of whether or not you have potential. They may also offer their input to steer you in the right direction as to where they see you “fitting in” in the industry.

How much money can I expect to make if I choose to do this for a living?

This depends on the projects you’re working on.  Is it local, regional, national, international?  All of these things have a big impact on your compensation amount.  It all comes down to the budget – the bigger the company, the bigger the pay.  Some voice actors make millions a year, while others make thousands, and some only hundreds.

Do I need to pay an agent upfront to represent me?
NEVER!  You share 10-15% of what you make as you make it.
